There are 4 main rules that must be respected when solving OET Listening, Part A:
𝟭. 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Example:
Text: possible damage to crowns. Both are ……
Correct answer: central incisors
Incorrect answer: two central incisors. (‘Both’ and ‘two’ have the same meaning and it should not be written twice.)
𝟮. 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.
Example:
Text: In 2017, diagnosed with ……
Correct answer: congestive heart failure
Incorrect answer: congestive heart failure, dementia. (The information about ‘dementia’ is heard in a different part of the recoding, and it is not valid for the year 2017.
𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀.
Example:
Text: In 2017, diagnosed with ……
Correct answer: congestive heart failure
Incorrect answer: con heart failure. (‘Con’ could either mean congenital or congestive, so the answer is unclear and it will not be taken into account.)
𝟰. 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀.
Example:
Text: In 2017, diagnosed with …..
Correct answer: congestive heart failure
Incorrect answer: congestive heart failure, improvement. (The answer is contradictory.)
